Trash Polka tattoo guide
What is a trash polka tattoo?
Trash polka is a collage style: realistic black and grey elements – faces, ravens, skulls, clocks – combined with abstract "trash" elements like heavy brush strokes, smears, splatter, lines, arrows and fragments of text. The palette is almost always black and red.
The tension between precise realism and raw, abstract marks is the point. Pieces tend to be large and dynamic, often planned across a sleeve or back.

Where it comes from
Trash polka was created in the late 1990s by Simone Pfaff and Volker Merschky of the Buena Vista Tattoo Club in Würzburg, Germany, who described it as a blend of realism and "trash" – a musical idea of rhythm and contrast applied to tattooing.
Choosing a trash polka artist
- Look for strong realism. The realistic parts must be good enough to stand alone.
- Check composition. The chaos should be deliberate – the eye should still flow through the piece.
- Give freedom. Trash polka works best when the artist composes the collage.
Cost and sessions
Most trash polka pieces are large and custom, priced by the hour or by the session, and completed over several appointments.
