Traditional tattoo guide
What is a traditional tattoo?
American traditional (also called old school or "Sailor Jerry" style) is the classic tattoo look: heavy black outlines, solid color packed in flat, simple black shading and no attempt at photo realism. The designs are deliberately simple so they stay legible as skin ages and ink spreads.
The imagery is a shared vocabulary – swallows, roses, daggers, panthers, eagles, ships, anchors, hearts with banners, pin-up girls and skulls. Many traditional artists still work from flash: pre-drawn designs on the shop wall that you can pick and get tattooed the same day.
| Lines | Thick, confident black outlines |
|---|---|
| Color | Red, yellow, green, blue and black, packed solid |
| Shading | Simple black shading, often whip shading |
| Best for | Forearms, calves, chest pieces, patchwork sleeves |
| Sessions | Most palm-sized pieces take one sitting |
| How it ages | Better than almost any other style |
Where it comes from
The style grew out of port-town tattoo parlors in the early 1900s, where sailors collected designs as souvenirs and good-luck charms – a swallow for every 5,000 nautical miles, a pig and rooster against drowning. Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins in Honolulu refined it in the 1930s–60s, borrowing color and composition lessons from Japanese masters, and Ed Hardy and others carried it into the modern era.
Choosing a traditional artist
- Look at healed work, not just fresh photos. Good traditional tattoos look almost the same years later – lines stay crisp and color stays solid.
- Check the linework. Lines should be one smooth, even weight with no wobbles, blowouts or gaps where color meets line.
- Ask about flash. Many shops have walk-in flash days or sheets on the wall – a fast, affordable way to get a classic piece.
- Size it right. A good artist will push back if you ask for a design too small to stay readable.
Cost and sessions
Small flash pieces are often priced flat, starting around the shop minimum (commonly $80–$150 in US cities). Larger custom pieces are usually charged by the hour or by the piece. Because traditional work is fast and solid, you often get more tattoo per hour than in realism or fine detail styles.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between traditional and neo-traditional?
Neo-traditional keeps the bold outlines but adds varied line weights, a much wider color palette, more depth and more ornate, illustrative detail. Traditional stays with a limited palette and simpler, flatter designs.
Do traditional tattoos last longer than other styles?
Generally yes. Bold black lines and saturated color hold up well as skin ages and ink spreads slightly, which is exactly what the style was designed for.
Can I walk in for a traditional flash tattoo?
Often, yes. Traditional shops are among the most likely to take walk-ins for flash. Check the shop's page for walk-in information or call ahead.
