New School tattoo guide

What is a new school tattoo?

New school is loud, playful and exaggerated. Subjects are distorted the way cartoons and graffiti characters are – oversized heads and eyes, bulging shapes, dramatic perspective – and filled with saturated, often neon color and heavy black outlines.

Popular subjects include caricatured animals, skulls, monsters, candy, video game and pop culture references, and comic versions of traditional imagery.

Where it comes from

New school emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s, shaped by graffiti, hip-hop, skateboarding culture, comics and animation. Artists pushed traditional tattoo imagery into cartoon territory, and the style exploded alongside the colorful tattoo conventions of the 2000s.

Choosing a new school artist

  • Look for clean, saturated color with crisp white highlights and no patchiness.
  • Find a drawing style you love. New school is very personal – each artist has a distinct character style.
  • Give them creative room. The best new school pieces come from letting the artist exaggerate and play.

Cost and sessions

New school work is custom and usually priced by the hour or by the piece. Heavy color packing takes time, so medium pieces are often a full-day session.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between new school and traditional?

Both use bold outlines, but new school adds cartoon exaggeration, dimensional shading and a far brighter, wider palette.

Do bright new school colors fade?

All color fades with sun exposure. New school's thick outlines and saturation keep it readable; sunscreen keeps it bright.

Can I get a character from a cartoon or game?

Many artists will draw their own take on a character. Expect a stylised interpretation rather than an exact copy.
