Dotwork tattoo guide
What is a dotwork tattoo?
In dotwork (or stippling), the artist creates shading by placing individual dots – dense where it should be dark, sparse where it should be light. The result has a grainy, textured gradient that looks like an old engraving or pointillist drawing.
Dotwork is closely tied to mandalas, sacred geometry and ornamental patterns, but it's also used for illustrative pieces, animals and botanicals, often in black only.
| Technique | Shading from individual dots (stippling) |
|---|---|
| Ink | Usually black; occasionally red or color accents |
| Common designs | Mandalas, sacred geometry, moons, botanicals |
| Best for | Upper back, sternum, forearms, thighs |
| Sessions | Slow work – larger pieces take several |
| How it ages | Well; dots soften into smooth shading |
Where it comes from
Dot-based tattooing has deep roots, including hand-tapped traditions in Polynesia and Southeast Asia. The modern style grew in the 2000s among European artists influenced by engraving, pointillism and geometric art.
Choosing a dotwork artist
- Look for smooth gradients. Dot density should change gradually, without blotches or random clusters.
- Check healed work. Healed dotwork should look soft and even, not patchy.
- Ask about time. Dotwork is slow; an artist who rushes it will show it.
Cost and sessions
Dotwork is usually priced by the hour or by the piece. Because every gradient is built dot by dot, it takes longer than line-based work of the same size.
Frequently asked questions
Does dotwork hurt more than regular shading?
Many people find it more tolerable – the needle taps rather than drags – though long sessions are still tiring.
Will dotwork blur over time?
The dots soften slightly and blend together, which usually makes the shading look smoother. Very tiny, tightly packed details can merge, so size matters.
Is dotwork the same as hand-poked?
No. Dotwork is a look that's usually made with a machine; hand-poked tattoos are made without a machine, needle by hand, and can be dotted or lined.
