Chicano tattoo guide
What is a Chicano tattoo?
Chicano tattoos are known for smooth black and grey shading, fine single-needle lines and ornate lettering. The imagery reflects Mexican-American culture and experience: the Virgin of Guadalupe, praying hands and rosaries, roses, clowns, women with headscarves or sombreros, lowriders, Aztec iconography and portraits of family.
Script is central to the style – Chicano lettering, with its sharp, decorative curves, is a craft of its own.

Where it comes from
The style grew in East Los Angeles barrios and California prisons from the 1960s and 70s, where artists made single-needle setups and used black ink alone. Artists such as Freddy Negrete, Jack Rudy and Mark Mahoney carried it into tattoo shops in the 1970s and 80s, and it became the foundation of black and grey worldwide.
Choosing a Chicano artist
- Look for smooth, soft grey shading and confident fine lines.
- Check their script. Chicano lettering is a specialty; look for even, sharp, flowing letters.
- Find an artist who knows the culture. The best Chicano artists understand the meaning behind the imagery.
Cost and sessions
Chicano pieces are usually priced by the hour or by the piece. Script and small religious pieces may take one session; large back and chest pieces several.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chicano the same as black and grey?

What do Chicano tattoo symbols mean?
Many relate to faith, family, loyalty, hardship and pride – the Virgin of Guadalupe for protection and devotion, for example, or praying hands for faith.
Can I get a Chicano-style portrait of my family?
Yes, family portraits framed with roses, script or religious elements are a classic Chicano composition.
